Here’s one from me: The Thought of God by Maurice Roberts.

I said on the other blog I was not going to make any suggestions but when you fall off the horse you have to get back up again. So here goes.
I suggest: Death by Suburb by David L. Goetz

O btw Lee I have been trying to sign up to be an author on the list and i cannot get to the page. It does not seem to be working. Can you add me?
August 25, 2007 at 11:16 am
Chris – WordPress has been having some technical issues since late last night, so that’s part of the problem. The other part is that you’re not a member of WordPress (see Current members). I sent you an invitation to join WordPress – once you do, you’ll automatically be added as a Contributor. When Danny or I see you listed, we can upgrade you to Author.

Please vote now! (Including all members with current book nominations.) The sooner we vote, the sooner we can get the books and start reading… Vote by commenting below.

Ok, Chris – you’re now an author.
Note: WordPress is going to undergo maintenance for 5 hours starting around 10pm Pacific tonight. It may or may not be available for posting during that time…

I like the idea of reading Graham Greene – The Heart of the Matter… I am much more interested in fiction for this first book.
I recently read the book The Road – which ironically is an Oprah’s book club book (I don’t think she should be allowed to pick good books fro her book club). Anyways, it was an interesting read about post-apocalyptic society.
We can even read – Into the Wild (which will be a movie soon), since Under the Banner was so good.
But to finish my rambling – my official vote will likely go to Graham Greene…
August 26, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Is Into the Wild an official nomination, Tato? (It’s a great book, btw.)
August 26, 2007 at 2:24 pm
I don’t know… because I don’t want to have my nomination for the next two months taken up since I cannot vote for it anyway anymore since Graham Greene got my vote…
August 26, 2007 at 2:34 pm
You can have more than one nomination on any given nomination list (though nobody has commented on the exact number yet – see the Bylaws post). What isn’t clear yet is what happens from one nomination list to the next. I suppose, since there’s no rule on this, that you can even vote for more than one book during a given voting period… I’ll add a comment about that in the Bylaws post.

I’ll go ahead and cast a vote — for The Heart of the Matter.

Note for local members: I get a 10% discount and free shipping on personal purchases from B&N.com through work (CA sales tax is added)…
And there’s always the library, if you’re looking to further reduce costs (and/or maximize shelf space!) There are many copies of The Heart of the Matter in the system, for example.
August 27, 2007 at 1:18 pm
By the way, I vote for my own nomination.
August 27, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Heart of the Matter is fine by me…
August 27, 2007 at 2:46 pm
I vote for The Heart of the Matter. Followed by Into the Wild, which I always wanted to read.
August 27, 2007 at 3:49 pm
My vote is for Death by Suburb. (I’m with Christian. Into the Wild is second)
August 27, 2007 at 3:53 pm
Tato – you had better nominate Into the Wild! It already has 2 votes and it hasn’t even been officially nominated…
August 28, 2007 at 2:41 am
Can Tato be fined or something for an insubordinate nomination.
(Which, by the way, I’ll vote for next time
)

Death by Suburb #2
August 28, 2007 at 8:14 am
Into the Wild… nomination is official for our second book. And I vote for it officially as well.
August 28, 2007 at 9:09 am
Tato is hereby fined 3 tots.
August 28, 2007 at 4:24 pm
I vote for my nomination Death by Suburb. I am also down with Into the Wild. I actually like all of them but since I have to I will put a vote in for book number two and have a vote on stand by.
August 28, 2007 at 5:40 pm
So does the reading period for the first book officially start on September 1? With a discussion start of Nov 1?
August 28, 2007 at 9:31 pm
Yes and Yes. I’ll update the Current Selection page shortly. That will be the place to look.
August 29, 2007 at 9:08 am
I vote for Into the Wild, since it’s the one I’m most likely to read …
btw, I’m all for keeping current and hip with the times, but I do all my reading on my phone nowadays, which in general restricts me to pre-1920 selections (public domain, that is) … so any choices that are available on say, Project Gutenberg, are going to be a lot easier for me to get my hands on.
In that spirit (not a nomination yet) who would be up for reading something like The Divine Comedy?
August 29, 2007 at 11:35 am
i vote into the wild. lets hurry up and read. no women.
August 30, 2007 at 8:45 am
So are those two books (Heart of the Matter/Into the Wild) a go for ordering and buying?
August 30, 2007 at 8:50 am
Yes! The Current Selection page has (and will have) the details on, well, the current selection (see a couple of comments above, too). I’ll add an “On Deck” line there as well.
August 30, 2007 at 9:26 am
Ben – personally, I’m currently reading a bunch of old stuff already (John Owen, Spurgeon, Dickens). And yes, some of those are on my PDA. I do have something of an interest in The Divine Comedy, but I’ve always been a poor reader of epic poetry. The only ones I’ve ever read and enjoyed have been The Illiad and The Odyssey. I even have a nifty 100+ year old copy of the collected poetical works of Milton (25 cents at a library sale in Kingston, NY), but I have never been able to get into it.
August 30, 2007 at 9:29 am
Oh – and Beowulf. I really enjoyed that.
August 30, 2007 at 4:49 pm
I read the entire Paradise Lost in college … I only had to read a few sections for an English class, but I decided to read the whole thing because I figured it would be the only time it could actually happen. Boy was I right … never again.
Speaking of the Odyssey and impossible reads, we could do James Joyce — Ulysses is on PG.
August 30, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Ulysses? Not going to happen
I have been interested in reading Proust for a while, however. I’ve only read The Defense, but I found Nabokov to be well worth the (not insignificant) effort.
